I think that no matter how strongly a contract is worded, or how careful one is, ultimately business must come down to trust. We must deal with each other honorably, and for business to be good we must trust that everyone else will deal with honor as well.
Here in the United States we are extremely successful materially in large measure because we can trust each other much more often than not, and in general we can trust that our government will not steal most of what we make or change the rules of business mid-stream too often.
A nation of business thieves, Russia comes to mind, will not be able to find our maintain large scale material progress because the Russian people can't trust the other guy to not rob him blind in any business deal. Hence the extreme wealth of some Russians contrasted with the shocking poverty of their neighbors.
Likewise a nation whose government does not respect the rule of law will always lag behind one ruled by a government that does. The United States and Mexico provide a prime example. In the United States we can know that we can save, invest, build a business, and be confident that the government will most likely not come along to steal it. On the other hand, Mr. Fox, the previous President of Mexico outlines in his book how the Government slowly stole the majority of the ranch started by his Grandfather, leaving Fox and family with only a small part of their previous land.
We must I think, as Americans, be ever watchful that we deal honorably with others, ensure that we only do business with those who deal honorably with us, and of course be wary of those politicians who advocate taking wealth from those who have earned it to undeservedly reward those who have not. This is how we protect and maintain our prosperity.
Why do I post this today? Because a merchant tried to cheat me recently. He didn't get away with it, but his ethics have certainly been on my mind.

Clearly, since World War 2, the United States has become the largest, most powerful empire the world has ever known. We don't call ourselves an empire, perhaps most people don't even think about us as an empire, but without any doubt we can lay claim to the old British boast and state that The Sun Never Sets On The American Empire.
I wonder:
Do we, the American people gain any fruits from our empire, or does it simply cost us dearly in blood and treasure?
Do we, the American people even want our country to control an empire, or have we simply fallen into it willy-nilly?
I think that I know the answer to my first question, I don't know about the second, but I think that as we continue to grow our empire, we had better, as a people, ask these questions of ourselves, and our government.

We are in the middle of Banned Book Week 2010. It's amazing to me, and saddening, that we actually need to have an event such as this to remind people of the fundamental rights of expression and reading.
Alas however, looking at the map of book challenges across these United States it seems that folks do indeed need a reminder of our most fundamental of freedoms.
I was pleased to see that Washington State is no hotbed of censorship, with only one school giving in to the statists who think they know best what other peoples children should be able to read.
The statist culprit? Leavenworth.

Unfortunately, as the map shows, would be book burners are prevalent throughout the United States, most states faring much worse than my Washington State. Oregon was especially surprising with a large number of book challenges.
What can we do? Buy a book. Any book. Cherish the right to read.
Countless blogs this morning have been proclaiming to me that today is Sexual Freedom Day. This gives me opportunity for reflection.
I see good news in the movement for erotic liberty and exploration. When I first began exploring bdsm femdom was still quite seedy. Dominatrices were forced to advertise in skin magazines, good information was difficult to come by, and many venues made one question his or her safety.

We must not give up the struggle; we must continue our move, as sexual beings, from the darkness into the light. As their birthright, women are granted, by God, ownership and control of their own bodies. How can we, as a free society, continue to jail those sex workers who for whatever reason choose the profession of prostitution? We, as humans, are created to be sexual beings. Why should we feel shame our guilt over our sexual fantasies or our efforts to bring those fantasies into our lives? All women and all men have a fundamental right to try and make a living for themselves, to try and pull themselves up in our economic system so that they may live better than their parents did before them. How can we, in socially liberal Washington State, continue to tolerate the political drive by prudes to outlaw independent sellers of our beloved coffee simply because they have developed an effective, interesting, unique, and slightly erotic way of competing with the giant corporation Starbucks?
As citizens of the United States, Washington State, and our Puget Sound we have a great deal of sexual freedom. To keep it, and to grow it we must use it, we must enjoy it, we must banish shame and guilt over our fantasies from our lives.
I have the freedom to write these words. You protect my freedom by reading them and passing them along to others. I have the freedom to publish a book detailing my erotic fantasies. You protect my freedom by buying it and telling others about it. I have the freedom to turn you over my knee for a good hard spanking that we both will enjoy. You protect my freedom by exploring that fantasy with me, without guilt or shame over it.

I think we can all agree that things are not going in our country as they should. President Obama has clearly been a disappointment to people from all points on the political spectrum, as has the Democratic Congress. Left and Right, people know that all is not as it should be.
Massachusetts sent the President and Congress a large warning last week, hopefully he, like President Clinton before him, will do the correct thing and heed it.
State oriented extremism always kills majorities in our country. It did in the Republicans when they were pushing a religious based agenda and it is killing the Democratic majority while they are pushing a socialist based agenda.
It is odd that the leaders of both parties never seem to quite figure out that the American people want and expect limited government. Limited socially and limited economically.
Perhaps someday they will learn.
Perhaps we can learn from 1948, before it's too late.
Make Mine Freedom
For three days in a row the Everett Herald has been running stories about the dangerous risks Everett cops are taking to protect us all from baristas in skimpy clothing. Thank god the cops in Everett are saving us from the horrible menace of almost visible nipples, they could be, like other departments, improperly focusing on much less dangerous crimes like rape, robbery, and youth violence.
Citizens of Everett should take pride in the fact that their boys in blue are risking their very lives to stop these young sluts from committing any more horrendous crimes, crimes as heinous as licking up whipping cream.
A quick run down for those who don't read the Herald:
Five women working at Grab N Go espresso in Everett were this week charged with prostitution for:
"...accused of stripping off their undergarments and flashing customers. Everett police also reported witnessing the women charge customers up to $80 to touch their exposed private parts."

The investigation into the women removing their panties did take over two months, but I'm quite certain that a better use of law enforcement resources could not be found anywhere. I mean good lord, if a woman is willing to take off her underwear, who knows what other sick and demented crimes she might be plotting. Hell, these tramps could be terrorists or serial killers. Lucky for us the Everett cops are on the job!
At another stand, off HWY 99, apparently it was felt that prostitution charges would not stick, so indecent exposure was the order of the day. A huge THANK YOU to the tipster who alerted the cops to this horrible crime wave.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I know that if I ever visit the City of Everett I'll be glad to know that I won't have to see any whore's bare butt cheeks! Muggers and rapists I can handle just fine, as long as the Everett cops are there, protecting me from renegade sluts.

On a serious note, we should not blame the cops for this horrible waste of law enforcement resources. It's not their fault, they are just following orders.
You see, the Mayor and the City Council want to pass an ordinance outlawing bikini espresso stands. Prudes hate coffee girls in bikinis, and prudes vote a lot more frequently than more open-minded people. Therefore, the Mayor and Council have hit on their ordinance as a cheap and easy way to score some votes for themselves.
The problem is of course that they do need to justify their ordinance somehow. To do so, they send out the cops to do their dirty work. Send out the cops to hit the girls with some goofy charges, that lets the media turn it into a 'crisis' that must be addressed, and viola, justification for the Mayor and his Council to pass their ordinance.
Sleazy politics at its worst.
Yesterday the small city of Monroe Washington opened a new and beautiful baseball park. An event that happens frequently in this country, but Monroe's park is radically different. It was built specifically for badly handicapped kids, built for them, to fit their specific needs.
The park was extremely expensive, I understand in excess of a million dollars just for the field and dugouts. Most of the resources used were from private sources, raised by the Rotary Club, with a rather large contribution from the State of Washington to finish the project.
This park is, in my view, an extreme example of America. A tremendous amount of resources were raised, mostly from the private sector, to build an extremely costly facility, all so that approximately 40 handicapped kids can have fun and play baseball.
Contrasting that extreme example of America is an extreme example of Europe. In Germany in 1938 such a thing could not have happened. It could not have happened because the government of Germany, following its official policy, killed Rotarians, and killed handicapped people.
Extreme examples, but examples that exist because of the basic political philosophical differences that exist between the United States and Europe.
At it's most basic European political philosophy holds that the State is paramount and that power and rights flow from the State to the individual. This is most easily illustrated by the English term Subjects. People of the UK are explicitly called subjects, individuals subject to the will of their ruler. Individuals subject to the will of the State.
At it's most basic American political philosophy holds that the individual is paramount and that power flows from the individual to the state. Rights are granted to the individual not by the state but by god. The founding document of the United States illustrates this very well:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. - That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, - That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it"
It is obviously true that in general, at this time, the people of Europe do not suffer horrible indignities based upon the European philosophy that dictates that they are inferiors of the State. It is equally true that the government of the United States has in a myriad of ways trampled the unalienable rights of American citizens. That does not however change the fundamental fact that these philosophies do give rise to occasional real world extreme examples of the differences between our two cultures. It is much harder for the government of the United States to commit evil acts upon its citizens than it is for any European government to commit evil acts upon its citizens. The basic political philosophy of America simply will not allow such evils to continue for too long, nor impact society too deeply.
Mussolini's Italy, Franco's Spain, Hitler's Germany, Vichy France, Stalin's Soviet Union, Putin's Russia, Communist Eastern Europe, and some would argue Blair's England. Totalitarianism seems to be the form of government most accepted in Europe throughout its recent history, and something we have managed to avoid, for the most part, here in the United States. We are blessed with this avoidance because of the political philosophy left us by our founding fathers.
Now, in this nation, there are repeated and loud calls for us to embrace European models of governance, European political philosophies and practices. We must resist these calls, no matter what promises of government largess we are given, for to embrace European political philosophy is to destroy that which has historically protected the United States from totalitarianism.
The United States is not Europe, it's very founding was a denial of Europe, a violent overthrow of European politics and philosophy. We must not betray our own revolution by now accepting European politics and philosophy, turning our backs upon the very foundations that created the freest, strongest, and most prosperous nation the world has ever known.
Our Fathers and Grandfathers, back through history to the very founding of our Republic could have chosen European political philosophy. Instead they chose to fight and die. Will we now, when our generations are called, accept European political philosophy without so much as a whimper simply because a charismatic President and his Congress promise us some nebulous "Hope"? I certainly hope not.

I raised a great deal of ire here among my regular readers when following our last election I posted my thoughts that Obama just might be good for our country.
My view at the time was that a positive President through the bully pulpit could talk the nation through its troubles. A positive President can talk a troubled economy into a strong one by increasing consumer confidence; a positive President can replace feelings of national negativity with those of national greatness. Ronald Reagan is in my view a perfect example of this.
Indeed the opposite can be true as well, and I am convinced that many of our current economic challenges can be directly traced to the negativism of our previous President and his advisors.
I did not vote for President Obama, but I did hold out hope that he would be a positive President who would use positive themes and speech in much the same way as President Reagan did. Alas, I fear that my hope was misplaced. It seems that his every speech is negative, as negative as his predecessor. Negative leaders spouting negative themes are not good for our nation nor the rest of the world. I sincerely wish that he will turn off his negativity and return to the positivism of his campaign. I fear however that it may be too late to do so now that negativism is firmly entrenched within his administration.
I am also extremely disappointed in the Republican Members of Congress. Now they have decided to take a principled stand against corporate bailouts, against socialism, against a shockingly bloated federal budget, and for letting the capitalist markets work.
I wonder, where were these turkeys when the last President started the never-ending cycle of corporate bailouts, when he put us on the path to socialism, when he was proposing spending bills one would have to be a drunken fool to support, when he was declaring the markets to have failed? Funny that our Republican Congressmen only feel that they should do their jobs, defend the principals upon which our nation is based, when a Democrat is sitting in the Oval Office.

My long time readers know that I am a Republican. Those who visit me really must understand that based upon the numbers of Republican campaign signs usually popping out of my yard every other October.
That said, I am looking forward to the Obama Administration.
I believe that with the exception of his appointments to the Supreme Court Mr. G.W. Bush has been an unmitigated disaster for our nation.
We are involved in a foreign war without the will to win.
Federal government spending has reached ridiculous heights.
Federal government intrusions upon individual liberties have grown exponentially.
Important allies around the world look upon our government with disdain.
Osama bin Laden remains alive and at large despite countless billions being spent in ineffective attempts to bring death to his door.
The rightful powers of Congress, and the Several States have been disregarded.
Torture has been made acceptable.
Imprisonment without Judicial oversight has been made possible.
President Obama will be a breath of fresh air. He will be a better President than his predecessor. Things will improve for American and Americans under President Obama. Of this I have no doubt.
Was he my first choice? No. My second choice? No. I recognize though that he will be much better than he whom we now have.
A vote for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil. I ask that you join me in voting for liberty, voting for true American values. Voting for Congressman Bob Barr for President.
Those of you who have been reading this blog for awhile know that I was a big fan of Congressman Ron Paul. He did not of course gain his parties nomination, I believe that Congressman Barr is the only true choice for those of us who want to keep the spirit of Paul's run alive.
Soon we will be asked to vote, and a Presidential Election year is always an interesting time.
Interesting, but also I think usually disappointing. This year is no exception. Both parties have put forward much less than ideal candidates.
I think that most people agree with me, that most people are generally disappointed with the nominees from each party when it comes to our Presidential Elections. I also think that most people vote for whomever they think is ‘the lesser of two evils.’
I’ve never been able to do that. I hold the view that ‘the lesser of two evils’ is still evil.
I would like to suggest a different approach. The approach of withholding our votes from the major parties, instead voting for a lesser party candidate, or an independent. Such folks will be on our Presidential ballots, and if we are ever to make positive change such folks need our votes as our votes help build momentum for independent movements, momentum that can be used in future years.
I know that people are afraid to vote for independent or lesser party candidates because they feel that they will be ‘throwing their vote away.’ I don’t think that is true, but it’s especially not true here in Washington State. Our state is not a battleground. We will not decide the Presidential Election. As residents of Washington we do not have a decisive vote in Presidential Elections and therefore cannot be ‘throwing our vote away.’
If enough of us who are dissatisfied with the major parties start voting for independent movements, we will bring true change to America.
They also suck, play with themselves, have affairs, partake in threesomes, explore fetishes, and enjoy bdsm.
They are a reflection of society at large; they are a reflection of us.
Elected officials fuck.
I would have assumed this truth to be self-evident.
Apparently it is not.
I find it very odd that we as a society always react negatively when we learn that our elected officials do indeed fuck. That they are indeed human.
I am not sure how we as a society expect them to reproduce, but it seems we just might think that they utilize some form of asexual reproduction not yet recognized by science.
This post is not a commentary upon those politicians who are rightly ousted for hypocrisy, those who like Washington’s own Representative Richard Curtis vote against equal rights for homosexuals while are indeed homosexual themselves. Such people deserve the ostracism and condemnation they receive.
This post is however a commentary upon those politicians who are ousted from their offices for showing a healthy interest in fucking, but who have not engaged in the condemnation of others, or efforts to keep rights from others simply because of what they enjoy in the bedroom.
(As an aside, this post is also not about Airstream brand travel trailers, and I think that I may be hearing some cheering about that in the background!)
The latest victim of this nonsense, of societies shock that elected officials actually fuck is Arlington Oregon Mayor Carmen Kontur-Gronquist.
The Mayor has an exquisite body, and to document it she had some not very racy erotic pictures taken. She’s a single mom, and shocker of shockers, she would like to have someone whom she can love and fuck. To find that special someone she posted these pictures on MySpace.
Well, of course the town found out, and of course the town was outraged. The Mayor was forced from office.
What I am proud to see is that the Mayor did not shy away from the controversy, nor did she apologize for her actions. Rather, in true capitalist fashion she decided to sell some of the pictures on eBay. Signed even. You can buy yours here.
I bought mine yesterday, and am proud to have the opportunity to show her my support.
This nation, our nation, faces serious problems. We need the very best people possible in our elected positions each of them doing their best to move our country through troubled times.
We don’t have those people. Congress and the Administration are filled with mediocrities. It is of course much the same on the state and local levels.
Everyone, including politicians, fuck. We demand to know everything there is to know about our politicians, including whom and how they fuck, then we condemn them for fucking.
We will not get the best and the brightest our nation has to offer as long as this state of affairs is allowed to continue. Extremely smart people will avoid holding public office because they are smart and want to avoid such scandal.
We will have the potential to get the best and the brightest our nation has to offer once we as a society recognize that everyone, each and every one of us, has a skeleton in the closet, that each and every one of us likes to fuck in a way that someone else might just consider strange. We must recognize that whom and how our politicians fuck is private and should not be used against that person. Only if we do these things will extremely smart people want to hold public office for only then will they know that whom and how they fuck will not become household knowledge.

It seems that we have lost our professional basketball team. My only reaction can be to say good riddance.
Professional sports are a business, a hugely profitable business.
Somehow we forget that. When the owners come to us the taxpayers seeking untold millions in subsidies too often we forget that the owners have the resources to pay their own way. Too often we cave to threats, we grant the subsidies.
This time our elected representatives did not. They told the Sonics to go to hell. Good.
I don’t often agree with Speaker of the House Frank Chopp, but in refusing yet another massive subsidy to the basketball business he did a very good thing, proved himself to be a responsible steward of our tax dollars.
Professional sports are emotional; I think that’s why we make such poor decisions when the ‘poor, struggling owners’ come begging for yet more millions. We need to take the emotions out of such decisions, to think about them in a rational manner.
When I built Studio Milliscent I didn’t have the opportunity to go begging to the taxpayers, asking them to pay the bill.
When the husband and wife who own the little grocery store in my town remodeled it last year they didn’t get the bill footed by the taxpayers because ‘the store is important to the city.’
I saved my money and built my studio. They saved their money and remodeled their store.
If the Sonics wanted a new arena, they should have paid for it. That’s the American way.
Unfortunately team owners, men who have made billions in our capitalist system suddenly embrace communism when it comes to their sports teams. Such disingenuousness rises to the level of immorality.
So Sonics, all I can say to you is don’t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out of Seattle.
So Clay Bennett, all I can say to you is that you are a bloodsucker who’s team received millions upon millions of dollars from the public purse while homelessness plagued Seattle and children suffered through poverty. I hope that there is a special place in hell for men like you who believe that the poor should support your lavish lifestyle and hobbies with their hard earned tax dollars.
