A Beautiful Week In The Mountains

I've been blessed with truly amazing weather this week. Hot sun with nary a cloud in the sky has greeted me every morning. Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the river is wonderfully clean and clear. Purple is the choice this year for my potted plants and they are all doing their best to dress up my deck.

The only trouble with the heat is that my hummingbirds seem to hate it. They have all disappeared, but I'm sure that they will return as soon as it cools a bit.

Along with a friend I did a bit of construction over the weekend, I've upgraded my buildings to larger propane storage tanks, but as one of them will be exposed to floodwaters I needed to build a massive concrete slab to affix the tank onto so that it doesn't float when exposed to water.

Luckily, here in the Cascades it does cool off in the evenings, so I'm without that awful humid nighttime heat that is so prevalent closer to the Puget Sound.

I remember reading a cheap science fiction book some decades ago in which most of the USA was devastated after some cataclysmic disasters. Washington DC was mosly under water, the "president" was a two-bit hick, and the only civilized and viable people still remaining were based in Puget Sound. They sort of took over from there.

I don't advocate the idea of disaster, but they must have had something going for them to remain strong, at least in the mind of the writer.

Susan's pet,

I love such books, but don't remember reading the story line you mention. Perhaps someday I will come across it.
